In an interview with The Guardian, Paddy Ashdown – a British politician and former diplomat for Bosnia and Herzegovina – explains how learning languages has changed his life. He admits that he didn’t excel at languages at school as a consequence of bad teaching, and that at the time he didn’t see the utility of knowing foreign languages.

Then, in the early 1960s, he travelled to Singapore as a young Royal Marine and he had a sudden revelation; how enriching is it to find how other culture express complex ideas or emotions? Someone told him that in Malay there was one word for the phrase “let’s take off our clothes and tell dirty stories” and he started studying the Malay language to find it.
Today Paddy Ashdown firmly believes that “The more you can speak of other people’s languages, the more you can be part of their lives and enrich your own.” Never said a truer word!
